A new driving method "CLEAR:High-Contrast, Low energy Address and Reduction of False Contour Sequence" for AC-PDPs (Plasma Display Panels) has been developed.
(1) Single reset period in a TV field was achieved with sufficient address margin. Consequently, black level's luminance decreases and dark room contrast ratio 560:1 is able to be achieved.
(2) For every TV field, only a single address pulse is required per cell, the address driving power is decreased.
(3) Because the sub-field's light-emission pattern is continually maintained, dynamic false contour does not occur in principle.

Organic electroluminescent(EL) cells using an organic phosphorescent material as guest emitter is very higher external quantum efficiency than using usual organic fluorescent material, but there is no report of the long lifetime of organic phosphorescent EL cells.
We investigate a possibility to prolong the lifetime of organic phosphorescent EL cells, and confirm the capacity that the lifetime is 3,000 hours at the first luminance of 818cd/m2, and the lifetime is possibly over 20,000 hours if the first luminance is 100 cd/m2.

A full-color 5.2-inch QVGA passive-matrix organic EL display has developed, adopting optimum R, G, B organic emitting materials and structures respectively, and selective deposition for the different emitting materials. The display features good color purity compared with that of the NTSC standard, white peak luminance of 150cd/m, an equivalent pixel size of 0.33 x 0.33 mm, and power consumption of 1.4W.Click for Details (PDF 996 KB)

The authors have developed a new driver scheme for an OEL full- color display module as well as anode and cathode driver IC's. The authors devised in the scheme (1) an "RGB individual high-reset" method by which bias level is optimized for each color , (2) a "current transfer method by which the current of the last column of an anode driver IC is transferred to that of the adjacent first column of the next driver IC, and (3) current adjustment function by a serial data that defines an initial luminance of the display module.Click for Details (PDF 1 MB)
Multi-body simulation has been applied to the mechanism of car electronics products. Simulation techniques for a mechanism driven by a small electric motor applied the constant voltage and a reduction gear that consist of a worm and a worm wheel have been developed. Considering the effects of slack and friction of a mechanism and the flexibility of parts, we can get the simulation result agree with the measured one.Click for Details (PDF 420 KB)

The authors developed two different types of agent-based applications that would be applied to real consumer electronics products.
One is the "Network Agent System" where users are able to interact with agents to fully enjoy a digital cellular phone, a home audio system and a car navigation system being integrated over the Internet, no matter where they are.
The other is the "TV Program Agent System" where the agent is able to recommend some TV programs to users that they would like on the Digital STB.
In this article the authors will unveil each of them in order. In addition the authors will refer to how the agent will derive what users would like from a huge amount of TV Programs.

We have developed the W-CDMA technology used in the communication method of the next generation mobile telephone. Comparison between the simulation value after the modulation / demodulation and the actual measurement value using the hardware has been done. As a result, the actual measurement value corresponded sufficiently to the simulation value. Also, we have developed the location technology using the OTDOA positioning method, which is the application technology of the W-CDMA. The standardization of MPEG-7 is currently under way and planned to be finalized in September 2001.
First an explanation is needed of the outline of MPEG-7. MPEG-7, formally named "Multimedia Content Description Interface", aims to create a standard for describing the multimedia content data that will support some degree of interpretation of the information's meaning.
The author will explain the MPEG-7 application developed in the author's MPEG-7 application development project. The MPEG-7 application consists of two pieces of software. One is an "MPEG-7 Encoder", which will accomplish the creation of MPEG-7 data from multimedia contents using a GUI (Graphical User Interface), and the other is "MPEG-7 Client Application", which will be used for search and retrieval of multimedia contents with MPEG-7 data.

The Digital Watermark that will be embedded in video signals is expected to be an important technology for copyright protection due to its robustness against circumvention.
We have been developing the Video Watermark as a member of the Video Watermark Group, so we will describe the outline of the technology and its standardization here.

A remote collaborative DVD authoring system over high speed network is developed. The system uses two kinds of advanced technologies called "Lossless compression" and "Synchronized previewing". These technologies are fundamentals of the system, and the results of evaluation using these technologies are detailed also in the paper. The system consists of four functional block elements, i.e. material transmission, synchronized playing, DVD contents verification and DVD media utilities. The elements of "transmission and playing" assist to share the materials for DVD contents among distant locations, such as video clips in various media and CG data, and the elements of "verification and utilities" support to author the DVD data and making DVD media between distant locations. A trial DVD media is created to verify the effectiveness of the system, and results of evaluation are also detailed. Several DVD Authoring Systems have been developed for the purpose of making Test Streams (Discs) that are strictly required for development of DVD players and DVD recorders in Pioneer, and for verification activities of the DVD Forum. The requested specifications of the Test Streams (Discs) are very unique and complicated, and they are difficult to make using authoring systems in the market. The authors have developed a driver's condition monitor to prevent an automobile accident caused by heart disease. The electrodes are set on steering wheel, which detect and amplify the voltage difference of both hands. Another sensor detects the touch of both hands on the handle, and determines validity of the data. The heart signal is then processed through noise detection, and if electrocardiogram data is not in the frame, it is marked 'noise'. This information is recorded on a memory card at fixed intervals. We review recent developments in recording materials for digital holographic data storage. We especially demonstrate new features obtained by using single crystal stoichiometric lithium niobate (LN) newly developed by the collaboration between Pioneer and NIRIM. The stoichiometric LN has many superior characteristics compared to the conventional congruent LN originating from its reduced nonstoichiometric defect density. By using stoichiometric LN we resolved a long-standing issue of destructive readout, and we developed a promising new recording method "PREX", in which selective initialization and selective re-writing can be achieved by all-optical means.Click for Details (PDF 684 KB)

The authors have realized a rewritable optical disk of 22.5 GB capacity having a thin cover layer of 0.1 mm thickness. The active layer of the phase-change disk is made from the eutectic family of Ge-In-Sb-Te materials.
The limit equalizer improved the playback system margin for a high-density phase-change optical disk.

In this paper, the relationship between acoustic parameters and psychological scale for the sound fields in order to create an artificial impulse response of a room based on the perception is described. First, 19 specific words were chosen expressing subjective impressions of the sound field from a Japanese language dictionary with 42,000 entries. To classify the 19 words, speech sounds are compared by way of dichotic listening. The speech sounds are a convolution of an anechoic speech and impulse responses of rooms measured by using a dummy head microphone. The words are clustered into 4 categories,1)high tone timbre,2)low tone timbre,3) spaciousness and 4) naturalness or clearness. Then, the 'spatial impression' was selected among 19 words and a scale of it was obtained by way of Thurstone's case V since it is one of the important factors in the sound field design. Second, to create an impulse response corresponding to the 'spatial impression', we investigated the relationship between the 'spatial impression' and acoustic parameters. As a result, we found that the initial part of impulse response plays an important role in controlling 'spatial impression'. The result is confirmed by a listening test by using artificial impulse responses.

The authors have developed an automatic sound field correction system in order to achieve an optimum listening environment for multichannel AUDIO.
The optimum listening environment is obtained by controlling the frequency characteristic, the sound pressure level, and the time alignment between each loudspeaker and the listening position to become almost uniform. This system has a microphone to measure the sound field and it can create the optimum listening environment by correcting the above mentioned parameters automatically.
As a result of inspections during a field test, it was confirmed that these 3 parameters were corrected with high accuracy.

The authors researched the multichannel recording and playback for accurate reproduction of sound field in the DVD-Audio multichannel format.
In this report, the new concept named "SLM: Sound Layer Method", using multichannel surround consisting of two layers, stage sound layer and ambient sound layer, is introduced.
For recording the natural ambience of a concert hall, a surround microphone array known as "KH-microphone array", an extension of stereo pair microphones, is developed.
Importance of time alignment between each channel at mixing down is also described.
An easy and accurate way of loudspeaker placement according to ITU-R recommendations using two templates, "H1 rule" and "H2 rule" is introduced.
Adjustment of bass management in terms of group delay characteristic of subwoofer is described.
The natural ambience and surrounding space of the sound field is achieved using the above recording/playback techniques.
Among potential applications of DVD as the next generation media, the potential of DVD-AUDIO was discussed for music reproduction as it can encapsulate enormous amounts of information.
The author describes the present status surrounding the music industry for DVD-AUDIO in Japan and why Pioneer had to produce DVD-AUDIO albums by itself even though it is committed to hardware manufacturer.
The know-how that we have accumulated during the course of making content known as 5.1 channel audio, a new stereo acoustic experience, cover a wide range of territories.
The author made it clear that the introduction of encoding and authoring facilities is essential to DVD-AUDIO pre-production as well as a carefully tuned recording and monitoring environment, and why it is crucial to provide contents for the future development of hardware.

The authors have developed the optical pickup for the third generation DVD-R/RW drives of Pioneer Corporation. The pickup is both for writing and reading of DVD-R/RW and CD-R/RW. We have realized new methods of optical adjustment of the optical path of pickups. Film-type organic electroluminescent (OEL) displays have a lot of attractive features. We developed the technologies that were needed in fabricating film-type OEL displays.
First, we evaluated the SiON as a moisture barrier film. By optimizing the ratio of O and N in the SiON film, we could obtain the barrier films that have high optical transparency and moisture impermeability. Next, we reduced the defects in the barrier films. By smoothing the polymer surface, we could reduce the pinhole defects in the barrier film and improve the environmental stability of the film-type OEL.
And we fabricate a trail production of 3-inch dot matrix OEL display using these technologies.
Studying the possibility of an organic EL from the view point of design,the author developed the application of the film organic EL display.
The author did advance design as the method of the instrument that a human being wears, while studying the world of ubiquity and agents.
The next concept that followed the "Wearable computer" is "Media fashion". The film organic EL is one of the optimal component technologies for "Media fashion". There is the possibility of the advances to the new industrial fields such as a robots as the an application of the film organic EL.
