Palais de Tokyo

The West Wing of the Palais de Tokyo is undergoing extensive renovations, and will be reborn in January 2002 as a comprehensive center for contemporary art. Part of a national cultural project conducted by France's Ministry of Culture and Communication, the museum will become a large, multipurpose center to help nurture contemporary art than just a museum.

Pioneer will be responsible for the installation and operation of all audio and video equipment of the west wing. Equipment will be installed in exhibition galleries according to individual exhibition plans under the guidance of exhibiting artists. The multipurpose hall, pavilion, boutique, salon, and other spaces will also be furnished with equipment suited for individual objectives. The main equipment that will be installed includes plasma displays, DVD players, DVD recorders, and other audio equipment, and Pioneer will also provide maintenance and technical support on a regular basis.

Pioneer believes that being a partner of Palais de Tokyo, an art museum that represents an overwhelming degree of creativity, will provide a valuable venue for Pioneer to embody the corporate philosophy of the Pioneer group, "move the heart and touch the soul", and promote it even further.

<About the Palais de Tokyo>

Built for the Universal Exhibition of 1937, Palais de Tokyo is an art museum in a magnificent building located in the center of Paris in view of the Eiffel Tower on the other side of the Seine, classes itself as a "site for contemporary art." The name came from the fact that the street along which the building is located was originally called Avenue de Tokyo. (Though the name of the street was changed to Avenue de New York, the name of the museum, which had become so familiar over the years, remained unchanged.) Since its foundation, it had been used mainly as a museum for modern art. But when the Centre Pompidou opened in 1977, most of the collection of contemporary art was moved there. Since then, only the East wing of the Palais de Tokyo has been in use, as the Museum of Modern Art of the City of Paris.

Though the West Wing was used at various times as a national photo center, a film school or other purposes, it has hardly being used in recent times. The government launched a national project to overhaul the West Wing (with floor space of 4,000 square meters) and revive it as a new center for contemporary art. The new Palais de Tokyo is scheduled to open in January 2002. (It will be open to the public from January 19, 2002.)
