DVD-R is a write-once medium that can store any type of digital information such as video, audio, images, multimedia titles and data files. The technology is used widely in the video and multimedia industries for testing, authoring, and developing DVD applications and titles, as well as distribution of DVD content.
In the summer of 1997, the DVD Forum issued the "DVD-R Specification Book Ver. 1.0" to offer a 3.95GB recording capacity. In October 1997, Pioneer announced the industry's first industrial use 3.95GB DVD-R drive, following it's launch of the company's second-generation product in a smaller size and at a lower price in July 1999.
In late May 2000, the DVD Forum issued the "DVD-R for Authoring Specification Book Ver. 2.0" for industrial uses, with the same capacity as other DVD formats of 4.7GB. With it's increased capacity, DVD-R becomes an even more ideal medium for the video and multimedia industries, and also for data intensive storage vertical markets such as medical imaging and document management. Today, Pioneer introduces the industry's first DVD-R Drive and Media complied with 4.7GB DVD-R.
