Pioneer Announces World'' s First Car Audio Products
with Organic Electroluminescence (EL) Multi-Color Displays

TOKYO, Japan, May 6, 1999 --- Pioneer Electronic Corporation announced the introduction of two car audio products with Organic Electroluminescence (EL) Multi-Color (green/yellow/orange/blue) Displays for the first time in the world.

Organic EL ^*1 display is a self-emitting type ^*2 display with superior features of high luminescence, high visibility, ultra-thin thickness and very small power consumption.With these unique features, it is expected to be utilized especially for automotive products and portable devices as next generation display. Pioneer has succeeded in introducing world's first mono-color type car FM Tuner "GD-F1" to the market in November 1997. The new Organic EL Multi-Color Display features high visibility under any brightness level and from any viewing angle securing safety driving. Its high speed response to the input information, more than 1,000 times faster than LCD, makes it possible to achieve moving images by color-step gradation.

High visibility (self-emitting type).
High level of brightness to produce four colors (surface-emitting type)^*3.
High speed to the input information (more than 1,000 times faster than LCD) makes it possible to produce moving images.
3D-graphic is achieved by color-step gradation.
Very thin display panel and very small power consumption as it does not need back lighting.

*1 Organic Electroluminescence (EL):
A light emitting element contains organic substances which emit light under electric currency.

*2 self-emitting type:
As the device itself emits light, visibility in the dark is high. CRT or VFD is also well known as self-emitting devices. (LCD does not self-emit, so a source of light such as a backup light is necessary.)

*3 surface-emitting type:
As the display surface emits itself, a high quality display is achieved. VFD used in audio products is in the same category. If the emitting body is point shaped, it is called a point-emitting type, which includes LED.

1 ) World’s first Organic EL Multi-Color display for car products enabling innovative displays

With the features of high speed response to the input information (more than 1,000 times faster than LCD) and color-step gradation, it enables innovative and unique 3D-graphic displays.
"Full Pixel" display enables such detailed displays as KAN-JI (Japanese character) and lists of disc titles.
High visibility under any brightness level and from any viewing angle.

2 ) Newly developed “MOS FET45”(metal oxide semiconductor field effect transistor), built-in45W x 4ch High-Power Amplifier

For the first time in the industry, Pioneer has succeeded in developing IC of "MOS FET45" high quality semiconductor, to be fitted into car audio products. Its high power 45W x 4ch and low distortion (approx. 20dB improvement compared to the previous models ---* measured by Pioneer) enables clear and powerful sound reproduction in wide range.

3 ) Advanced digital technologies enables high quality sound and various audio functions

Featuring "Digital Direct Transmission High Quality Audio Circuit" realizing high quality sound with no distortion of music signals while transmitting.
Featuring "Auto Equalizer Function" which automatically adjusts equalizing to an optimum for each car-cabin.
Featuring "real time ASL function", which compensates sound quality masked by road noise, by controlling volume level and equalization.
"Octaver Function" creates a bass sound and add it to an original music source.
Able to drive subwoofer directly by the built-in amplifier.
