Pioneer Introduces New DVD Car Navigation Products with Single Sided, Dual Layer DVD-ROM 8.5 GB Disc:The First to be Introduced in the Industry
Tokyo, Japan, May 7, 1998 --- Pioneer Electronic Corporation announced to introduce new DVD Car Navigation Systems and related products to the Japanese market.
They are: Three up-rated models of DVD Car Navigation Systems, two Car Wide-Screen LCD Display Monitors, DVD-ROM Navigation Map and Serial Port Card.

In June 1997, Pioneer successfully introduced the industry's first DVD Car Navigation Systems that can contain and provide vast volume of information such as detail road maps, unprecedented variety of entertainment and many other contents. But in order to deal with increasing demand for more and more information (such as more detailed city maps, traffic regulations and telephone numbers), Single Sided, Single Layer disc (4.7 GB) is not sufficient in capacity and it became necessary to develop Car Navigation Products with Single Sided, Dual Layer disc of 8.5 GB.
The newly developed Single Sided, Dual Layer disc (8.5 GB), the first to be adopted in the Car Navigation Systems in the industry, has as much capacity as 1.8 times of Single Sided, Single Layer disc, which is equivalent to 13 pcs. of CD-ROM discs. The Single Sided, Dual Layer disc has made it possible to record far great data and to gain much quicker access to these data.
"AVIC-D717" is a high cost-performance model loading a variety of useful functions. In "AVIC-D919", in addition to the functions of "AVIC-D717", it has the function of "Voice Recognition System". This model is equipped with PC card slot, with which users can receive real time information of the present location through internet service. "AVIC-D710" is a packaged system, in which car computer of the same grade as "AVIC-D717" and 7 inch wide-screen LCD TV("AVX-P707W") are combined as a set.
As "AVIC-D919", "AVIC-D717" and "AVIC-D710" are all equipped with FM multi-channel tuner, VICS (Vehicle Information Communication S ystem) and D-GPS (Differential Global Positioning System) can be received. These models have achieved speeding up scroll of the map and more accurate positioning information. On the other hand, the design renewal reduced the cost for more affordable prices.
Pioneer also introduces two new type display monitors: "TV-W818" is a 8 inch wide-screen LCD TV, the biggest size in the industry, and AV system TV "AVX-P707W" has a feature of automatic flip-up function activated by the ignition switch, the function to be adopted for the first time in the industry.
DVD software "CNDV-200" for upgrading version, will be also introduced to the market so that users with 1997 models of DVD Car Navigation Systems ("AVIC-D909", "AVIC-D707" and "AVIC-D700") can still enjoy the latest functions of 1998 model Car Navigation Systems.
1 ) The main CPU featured high-speed 32 bit RISC chip
New models are also loaded with newly developed drawing processor for more sophisticated map display.
2 ) "3D Highbrid Censor" achieved higher accuracy of positioning
information
In addition to horizontal measurement (2D), it also measures vertically (3D) so more accurate positioning information can be obtained.
3 ) VICS/D-GPS information is received with FM Multi-Channel Tuner in Car Navigation Systems
4 ) Loaded with "Voice Recognition and Synthesis System" and PC card slot.

5 ) Wireless Remote Controller
With the wireless remote controller having flip-up function, users can easily, operate "10 Key Customized Functions" (see page five), Car Navigation System, display monitor and overlay disc player.
6 ) Set model of Car Navigation and 7 inch wide-screen LCD display monitor ("AVIC-D710")
Available are two kinds of selectable two-divided display: "P side P"(P icture side Picture) and "P in P" (Picture in Picture), and four selectable display monitor modes: "Zoom", "Just", "Full" and "Normal" (see page five).
1 ) Abundant data stored in a Single Sided, Dual Layer DVD-ROM 8.5 GB disc
* Detailed maps of about 290 cities in Japan
They are all colored and can clearly recognize the shapes of the buildings. When a certain building is designated, it also shows the various facilities located inside the building.
* Accessible abundant data
For example, data contain details of nationwide 20,000 parking lots; business hours, closed dates, accommodation capacity, fees, discount allowance, and so on.
Convenient for shopping: By inputting the name of the department, the user can search the nearest parking lot.
Detailed information of about 8,300 playspots: Closed dates, business hours, fees and charges.
Detailed information about ATM including business hours of about 20,000 banks and post offices.
Users can get the desired information simply by using the keywords by part of names or by areas or genres. This operation can also be done by using 10 keys of the remote controller.
Users can get information of about 49 million telephone numbers, addresses and many other pieces of information in excess of the conventional DVD-ROM disc.
2 ) More Advanced Navigation Functions
* New Route Information Function
In addition to the Pop-Up Function (which shows the name of the junction on the 3D map), the new Route Information Function displays the name of two junctions ahead as well on the right side of the wide-screen display monitor. User can secure safe driving by knowing in advance such information as names of the junctions, distance from where the driver is, and the direction to turn in.
* Automatic Scale Change
When the driver comes near to the junction where he/she is going to make a turn, the map automatically zooms-up. Furthermore, when the driver passes over the junction, the map zooms-down so that the next route information can be automatically displayed on the monitor.
* Enlarged 3D Information of the Junction
Enlarged 3D display makes it possible for users to easily recognize junctions and intersections.
* New Highway Modes
3D Junction Mode
Junctions and exits on complicated city highways are displayed in 3D illustrations.
Route and distance to the destination as well as necessary tolls are automatically showed by color. Furthermore, another map can be displayed simultaneously on a side of wide-screen display monitor.
Inter-city Highway Mode
Inter-city highway mode clearly displays such information on the junction as route separation, direction and exit. It also automatically displays distance to the destination.
3 ) Wider Range of Human Interface
* Quicker processes of map display and scroll by adopting the newly developed "Drawing Algorithm"
* "Multi Voice Help" function helps the "Voice Recognition System"(only "AVIC-D919")
When the driver is at a loss what to say in using Voice Operation, "Multi Voice Help" is helpful in choosing proper words for next command from the list of words shown on the monitor. "10 Key Direct Voice Control" can make the functions memorized in 10 keys in the remote controller, and operative by voice too.
* "10 Key Customized functions"
Most frequently used 10 functions can be memorized into 10 keys of the remote controller. Users can also memorize up to 24 kinds of functions to choose out of about 90 kinds of functions available.
4 ) Loaded with original WWW browse for internet service (only "AVIC-D919")
* Pioneer's newly developed WWW browse "Brainscope" for exclusive use for Car Navigation Systems
"Brainscope" enables users to receive internet service such as "MobileLink" and "Inter Navi System". (Users can obtain various information through internet by connecting optional Serial Port Card "CNSC-DS9", data adapter and digital cellular phone to the PC card slot of "AVIC-D919".)
* Linked with the new "MobileLink" internet service
Various information will be supplied to the drivers by the new service and will be linked to the data of Car Navigation Systems.
* Linked with the "Inter Navi System"
The new service is planned to start in July 1998, supplying similar service to the new "MobileLink".
It is the substantial augmentation of the existing "MobileLink" service started in November 1997, and will start service in June 1998, jointly and severally by Pioneer and ten other companies. The new service provides information about the location of shops, stores and other various facilities figured out by latitude and longitude. On the other hand, map supply internet service "MapFanWeb" provided byIncrement P Co. (Tokyo, Japan. President: Mr. T. Shimizu), a group company of Pioneer Electronic Corporation, will be linked to the new "MobileLink" from early June, 1998.
5 ) Other New Functions
* Receiving both VICS and D-GPS information
Users can receive FM multi-channel information of VICS and D-GPS information with automatic switch over.
* VICS information of traffic jam
Information of traffic jam ahead of the driving route will be voice-guided at the user's request. A map of the area in vicinity of the traffic jam is also shown.
* Memorize 3D symbols representing spots
Users can select symbols of their preference out of about 30 3D symbols so that such 3D symbols can represent the spots of one's choice.
* Left / Right Up Mode for wider illustration
Making the best use of wide-screen display monitor, driving direction can be always set to be shown either left or right side of the monitor, even in the case of 2D (vertical) display.
• "TV-W818" ("P side P" 8 inch Wide-Screen LCD TV Package)
1 ) It features high quality 8 inch wide-screen LCD --- the biggest in the industry
* Achieved high quality display by changing the materials of LCD, color filter and back light
* Achieved adequate brightness for car use
Low-reflect panel and auto-dimmer, which adjusts back lighting of LCD depending on outside brightness, optimize visibility of the display.
* Equipped with the speaker (φ36 mm) at the back of the display monitor for sound Moreover, with Pioneer's Car Navigation System, voice guidance can be heard from the speaker. The speaker can be used even when the display is switched off.
2 ) Versatile displays on wide-screen monitor
* 8 inch display monitor can be divided into 12 so that maximum 12 broadcast stations can be memorized (One broadcast is live displayed and others still)
* "P side P" (Picture side Picture) --- Display is divided into two. "P in P" (Picture in Picture) --- A small display appears in the main display.
* Favorite Song Function
When selections are made of "Key Control", "Guide Vocal" and "Guide Melody" of a given song, the player will identify the certain song and recall the same setting and activate the pre-set condition setting automatically when that song is replayed.
* TV Wide Modes (Selectable from five types) --- Normal / Full / Just / Zoom / Cinema.
3 ) Dial Selector for easy operation
By using the dial selector equipped in the monitor, users can easily change and select the modes of display.
4 ) TV Tuner automatically controls receiving condition of audio signal depending on strength of wave
5 ) Loaded with Area Preset Function so as to directly select receivable TV stations
Combined with "AVIC-D919 / D717", the function is activated.
6 ) To be installed in 1-DIN space of center console by using a DIN-mount clamp "AD-V808"
• "AVX-P707W" (7 inch Wide-Screen AV System TV)
1 ) Automatic flip-up operation of 7 inch wide-screen LCD in-dash display monitor for the first time in the industry
The size of the display of this model, 7 inch, is the biggest in the industry as an in-dash type. It is equipped with a speaker (φ36 mm) at the back for the sound of TV, a speaker that can be used for voice guidance with Pioneer's Car Navigation.
