News Release：The World's First 720 disc Changer, Capable to handle DVD-R, DVD-ROM ,CD-ROM and CD-R

Tokyo, Japan, April 6, 1999 --- Pioneer Electronic Corporation introduced today the world’s first 720 optical disc changer, DRM-7000, which was the main component of the changer system, named "Flex Library". This system has versatility to handle DVD-R, DVD-ROM, CD-ROM, CD-R and a variety of mixtures of those discs. The changer can store maximum 720 DVD-ROM discs with two drive units and which memory capacity tallies 3.38 TB ( Terabyte, TB= 1,000 times of Gigabyte )

< Background of the Development >

There has been an increasing demand for data storage devices with much larger memory capacity, especially in such areas like medical technology where MRI, CT scan data have to be kept, and also meteorology, astrophysics, and other government applications , which require to store enlarging memory data for its analytical study purposes. To meet such a demand, Pioneer has developed the industry’s first optical disc changer capable to store and drive DVD-R, DVD-ROM , CD-ROM and CD-R in one unit.
And the configuration of these disc media can be flexibly chosen in accordance with the customer’s requirements. The system can offer wide range of memory capacity, depending on its configuration of disc media and in case of the combination of two DVD-R drives and 720 DVD-R discs, its memory capacity reaches 3.38T.B.

< Main Features >

1. It offers flexibility. 370 up to 720 discs and from 2 to 16drive units can be installed into the system with any combination of either drivers or disc magazines. The customer can install up to 16 drives with a mixture of DVD-R, DVD-ROM, CD-ROM and CD-R drives. The number of discs in the changer varies depending on the number of drives installed. For example, when 16drives are installed, maximum 370discs can be stored. And in this case, 16 clients can access the changer at the same time, the system realizes its highest access speed. Or if a customer only requires one or two drive units, the changer can store 720 discs. This will be a useful system for medical science or other academic or governmental use, where a large memory capacity is needed.
2. Magazine ID offers easier filing control system.Each magazine has an ID memory where you can record titles or data identity. By linking the magazine’s ID and your computer data, you can quickly transfer the information. This ID also can be used to control magazine library outside the changer.
3. The hypermagazine allows you to exchange up to 20 discs at once without interrupting operation.
